At Envision Academy, we see every school day as an opportunity to build community with our students and create rich learning experiences. Here’s what a Day in the Life of an Envision student looks like:
Welcome to Envision Academy
7:45-8:30 AM
Teachers welcome students to campus! At Envision Academy Middle Grades (EAMG), that means lots of hugs and smiles. At Envision Academy High School (EAHS), our school admin team welcomes each and every student personally through the front door.
8:10 At EAMG
Students gather in Advisory class, where they engage in daily conversations and activities that build community and resilience. Advisory becomes a family for students, a place they can get support and love from teachers and classmates.
8:30 At EAHS
Mondays start with 25 minutes of Silent Sustained Reading: every single person in the building begins the week by picking up a book, kickstarting the brain and reading. Then it’s on to Advisory.
8:55 At EAHS
High School students gather in their advisory and check in on their progress toward completing projects, planning for exhibitions and presentations, securing their junior year internship placement, or applying for college.
9:25 AM
Ms. Ray’Von’s 11th grade AP Government students research landmark Supreme Court Cases and how they have impacted our society and culture, while over at the middle school, Ms. Katz’s 6th graders are using what they’ve learned about Greek Mythology and the Hero’s Journey to illustrate and/or write their own 6 part myths.
10:35 AM
Focus on math! In middle school, students work in small groups to master ratios, while in high school, students are solving complex equations in order to figure out how long it will take to get Rapunzel down from the Tower by graphing her hair growth.
Lunch Time!
11:40 AM
Lunchtime on both campuses! Students use the time to socialize with friends and teachers. Middle schoolers get some much needed outdoor time. Both campuses provide free lunch daily, and high schoolers can also grab lunch from one of the downtown Oakland eateries.
1:00 PM
Back to academics! In three afternoon class periods, our students hone their academic chops. In high school, ELA students read complex texts like Beloved by Toni Morrison and break down the topics in a Socratic seminar, connecting what they are reading to current events and issues they care about. Middle schoolers tackle Humanities or Science projects using their knowledge of thermodynamics to build hot tubs and solar.
END OF DAY
The school day ends at 3:15 for middle school and 3:45 for high school — but both schools remain vibrant places for students to spend time. 6-8 graders participate in our afterschool program, featuring art and enrichment programs, while high schoolers are busy with all kinds of extracurricular activities, including basketball, soccer, our Black Student Union, cheerleading, and more.
